I am fascinated by this sub genre.

Genre is general is a topic I could bitch about endlessly. I’ll probably write a longer article at some point about my strong genre opinions and why it’s a massive double edged sword and often a useless metric based entirely on individual perception.. .But, I digress…

Post punk has become just as vast and diverse as punk itself in a lot of ways and this sub genre of it is a perfect example of that.

Egg Punk came out of Indianapolis and was originally termed ‘Devo Punk’. I’m sure you can guess who that is in reference to. It’s extremely tongue in cheek in general. The lyrics, tone and attitude is all sarcasm. It’s also fun.

The Coneheads, founded in 2013 are one of the most referenced bands in the genre. It’s a relatively new phenomenon. That was when people started using the ‘Devo’ term. Later on in 2017ish, the internet being what it is – there were some memes referencing “egg punk” and “chain punk” that really spawned the term we use now.

Chain punk is angrier than the satirical and sarcastic egg punk people.

Fuzzy, synthy and retro – it’s not what a lot of people think of when they hear about a post-punk band by any means. It’s not industrial, it’s not pop – but it’s bouncy and fun.

It feels like one of those genres that may never fully spread into mainstream in other cities, but I would certainly go see an egg punk band if they make it out to new england.
